BEST Happy Hour
BEST S.B. County Brewery

Paul Wellman
Hostess Katherine Merritt serves up the good stuff at Brewhouse, the readers’ pick for Santa Barbara County’s best brewery.
Brewhouse 229 W. Montecito St., 884-4664
Here’s a happy happenstance: readers picked the best brewery, which just happens to serve beer at the place with the best happy hour. Coincidence? Happy hour is every day of the week from 4-6 p.m. and includes half-price pints and big deals on wine and well drinks, which this merry establishment also serves. That’s not enough? Well there are at least eight menu items under $6, which means you can get a gourmet grog and gruel for such a deal.
thanks paul for the good words and picture.

Event not to be missed: Third annual Oktoberfest

History: Contrary to popular belief, Oktoberfest was not founded as an excuse to consume absurd amounts of beer and bratwurst. Originally, the celebration was meant to honor of the wedding of the Bavarian Crowne Prince Ludwig and his bride, Princess Therese von Saxony-Hildburghausen, on Oct. 12, 1810, in Munich, Germany. The extensive "Volksfest" event went on for five days, to which all citizens of Munich were invited. It was a grand, elaborate party with music, food and, of course, lots to drink. And since the wedding celebration was so elaborate and loved by all, an annual Oktober celebration came about on the Theresienwiese, or "Theresa's fields."

Modern times: Every state and most towns in America have their own version of this German-inspired party. And Santa Barbara is no exception. The third annual Oktoberfest social gathering will be held from 11 a.m. to midnight today and Saturday under the big tent at The Brewhouse.

On tap and on plate: Hofbrau, Spaten, The Brewhouse Oktoberfest Pilsner, bratwurst, pretzels and other traditional German enhanced dishes will be served.

Music: Tonight catch the sounds of The Red Baron, a one man Oktoberfest band. Dance the Chicken Dance on Saturday to the tunes of the Oktubafest 14-piece German tuba band.

Extras: Don't forget to dust off those Lederhosen you have way back in the closet. A Bavarian costume contest will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday as well as the bratwurst-eating and stein-holding contests.

Oktoberfest is October 6th and 7th 2006
